Too Much Light:
Most plants suitable for terrariums don’t need extremely bright light. If placed in direct sunlight or very bright light, the terrarium glass can act like a magnifier and burn the plants. The temperature inside the terrarium can rise quickly, turning it into a sauna before you know it. Most plants can’t tolerate this heat, so it’s best to keep terrariums out of direct sunlight.

Too Little Light:
While too much light can be a problem, most plants need at least some light to survive. If your terrarium isn’t getting enough indirect light, consider using grow lights or fluorescent lights as a supplement, or place the terrarium near a window that provides good, indirect light.

Too Close to a Heat Source:
Heat generated by radiators or heating vents can quickly kill your plants. If you place your terrarium on or near a radiator or another heat source, most terrarium plants won’t survive.

Overgrown Plants:
Don’t let your terrarium plants become too bushy and overgrown; you want to be able to appreciate the individual plants and see the other decorative elements inside the terrarium. Keep your terrarium plants neat by trimming them when they become overgrown and crowded. You can also trim their roots to keep them small.

Failure to Remove Dead Plants:
If a terrarium plant looks diseased, is dying, or isn’t thriving, remove it immediately because its problems can spread to other plants. Replace it with a plant of similar size and with similar moisture and light needs. Be sure to cover the roots with soil, leaving no air pockets.

Dirty Glass:
From time to time, clean the inside and outside of your terrarium glass. If the glass is too dirty or foggy, it will be difficult for light to reach your plants. Use a damp piece of newspaper or a lint-free cloth. Avoid using harsh cleaning products inside the terrarium, as the chemicals in these products can harm your plants.

Overwatering:
One way to prevent overwatering is to use a spray bottle instead of a watering can. If you do overwater, soak up the excess with a paper towel. Leave the top of your terrarium open until it dries out. If you’re using moss in your terrarium, you might want to lean towards a closed terrarium system, as these moisture-loving plants thrive in a terrarium with a lid, creating an environment similar to an enclosed rainforest.
